Why we created this course

This course is for those responsible for reporting on the maturity of accessibility programs.

Measuring organization-wide program maturity with respect to accessibility is becoming a regular required practice. In the 2022 survey of U.S. federal government departments, agencies were asked to rate maturity levels of various aspects of their programs using a four-point scale.

In the subsequent year’s government-wide Section 508 assessment, conducted over the Spring and Summer of 2023, there were 105 questions asked of agency 508 teams (/accessibility points of contact). Roughly two fifths of the questions were aimed at assessing program maturity.

The guidance from the government provides only the starting point for measuring program maturity. To better help you get to the heart of the issues—and measure where your program really is—we will teach you to apply social science methodologies used in academic research.

Course objectives and topics

We aim to provide accessibility practitioners with a grounded understanding of techniques for assessing program maturity. The course culminates with the creation of an implementation roadmap for each participant.

The course is arranged into seven topics:

  1. Understanding Maturity Models
  2. Ad hoc approaches versus Social Science Methods
  3. Data collection methods – using artifacts
  4. Data generation methods – conducting interviews
  5. Data collection methods – what to avoid
  6. Tracking program maturity in your agency
  7. Implementation of the approach
